The Kicking Horse Canyon Phase 4 project improved 4.8 km of Trans-Canada Highway 1 to a high speed four-lane divided standard in steep mountainous terrain in an environment subject to significant rockfall, avalanche, and debris flow hazards.
Collaboration was the guiding principle for BGC, Stantec, Thurber and WSP to work side-by-side to help design and construct one of Canada’s largest pipeline projects, the Trans Mountain Expansion Project resulting in efficiency and innovation.
When a rockfall on Highway 97 near Summerland, BC indicated the initiation of a large rockslide, Thurber supported MoTT with a quick response, timely recommendations, and a safety-first approach that opened the highway to traffic within two weeks.
The November 2021 extreme rainfall event overwhelmed drainage, resulting in local failure to a wall supporting Highway 1. McElhanney and Thurber mobilized immediately and worked together to restore this crucial highway link on an expedited schedule.
