About the Project

The Revelstoke Highline Suspension Bridge and Viewing Platform is a 75.5-m long pedestrian suspension bridge paired with an 8.3-m cantilevered viewing platform, constructed at approximately 1,690 m elevation at Revelstoke Mountain Resort. Spanning between two mountain ridges above a 1,250-m-deep valley, the project provides visitors with panoramic views of the Columbia River, the City of Revelstoke, and surrounding alpine peaks.

The bridge is supported by four 50-mm-diameter suspension cables without towers or vertical hangers, minimizing visual and environmental impact while addressing extreme site constraints. All loads are transferred through reinforced concrete abutments secured directly to bedrock using post-tensioned rock anchors, significantly reducing excavation and concrete volumes in a sensitive alpine environment.

Lightweight, one-meter modular steel deck panels with open grating were prefabricated to enable efficient transportation and rapid installation in a remote, high-altitude location with limited access. The adjacent viewing platform uses cantilevered steel girders and a torsional stiff perimeter system to safely accommodate asymmetric pedestrian loading.

Designed and inspected by Parsons’ bridge design team, the $3.6-million project demonstrates engineering excellence through innovative structural solutions, advanced analysis, and constructability-driven design, delivering a safe, durable, and iconic destination while respecting the surrounding natural landscape.

Approach

The project team adopted a constructability-driven approach focused on minimizing environmental impact, reducing on-site risk, and accommodating extreme alpine conditions. Early collaboration between the owner, contractor, and engineering team informed a tower-free suspension concept that eliminated the need for heavy foundations and large cranes in inaccessible terrain.

Advanced structural analysis was used to evaluate pedestrian, wind, snow, seismic, and temperature effects, with particular attention to wind-induced behavior and temperature-dependent cable geometry. A four-cable system was selected to provide structural redundancy and enhanced robustness during construction and operation.

To address limited access and short construction windows, the bridge and viewing platform were designed as prefabricated modular components with bolted connections. Installation relied primarily on helicopter lifts and a spider excavator, significantly reducing work at height and environmental disturbance. Foundations were intentionally detailed with flexibility to accommodate unforeseen rock conditions encountered during construction, allowing rapid field adjustments without schedule delays.

Continuous engineering presence during construction ensured safe sequencing, quality control, and real-time adaptation to changing site conditions, enabling successful delivery in a highly constrained mountain environment.

Results

The project was completed safely, on schedule, and within the $3.6-million budget despite extreme terrain, weather, and geotechnical challenges. The lightweight, modular design minimized environmental impact while delivering a durable, low-maintenance structure. The Revelstoke Highline has become a signature attraction, enhancing visitor experience and supporting year-round tourism at Revelstoke Mountain Resort.
