About the Project
Mangrove Lithium partnered with BBA Consultants to deliver a first-of-its-kind demonstration facility addressing one of the most constrained and strategically critical stages of the global battery value chain: refining lithium into battery-grade lithium hydroxide for electric vehicles and energy storage systems.
Although lithium resources are globally distributed, refining capacity remains highly concentrated, creating supply-chain vulnerabilities and increasing the carbon footprint associated with long-distance transportation. Mangrove’s proprietary electrochemical technology challenges this conventional model by enabling a modular, feedstock-flexible refining platform capable of producing battery-grade lithium hydroxide closer to mines, recycling facilities, or battery manufacturing hubs.
BBA’s mandate was to translate this emerging laboratory- and pilot-scale technology into a safe, operable industrial facility capable of demonstrating technical, operational, and commercial viability. Delivered under an immovable year-end milestone tied to financing and tax-credit eligibility, the project required engineering to advance in parallel with evolving process knowledge, long equipment lead times, and significant schedule pressure.
Through adaptive engineering, disciplined risk management, and close collaboration with the client, contractors, and technology vendors, the facility was successfully designed, built, and commissioned. The project bridges the gap between pilot success and commercial deployment, provides credible operating data, and validates a new pathway for lithium refining.
Beyond its immediate technical achievement, the project strengthens Canada’s battery ecosystem, supports domestic supply-chain resilience, and establishes a repeatable delivery model for scaling emerging clean technologies from innovation to industrial reality.
Approach
BBA adopted an integrated, adaptive delivery approach tailored to the realities of a first of its kind clean technology scale up. As process parameters continued to evolve throughout the project, engineering, procurement, and construction progressed in parallel using conservative operating envelopes and structured decision gates to protect safety while preserving schedule certainty.
The execution strategy emphasized disciplined schedule governance to meet a non negotiable year end milestone tied to financing and tax credit eligibility. Rather than waiting for perfect or complete information, the team focused on steady progress, informed decision making, and proactive risk identification and mitigation.
Close collaboration with Mangrove Lithium, contractors, and specialized equipment vendors enabled rapid problem solving and continuous alignment between engineering intent and field execution. A sustained onsite presence supported real time coordination and efficient integration of first of kind process equipment within an active construction environment.
Materials engineering and risk management were treated as dynamic, iterative processes. BBA worked directly with suppliers to validate materials compatibility, identify practical alternatives, and update hazard analyses as process knowledge matured, enabling safe and successful commissioning despite technical uncertainty.
Results
The project successfully commissioned a first-of-its-kind electrochemical lithium-refining demonstration facility, validating the technology beyond pilot scale. It established local production of battery-grade lithium hydroxide, strengthened domestic supply-chain resilience, generated critical operating data, and created a clear pathway toward future commercial deployment supporting the clean-energy transition.
