About the Project
RAM delivered BC Hydro service connection design services for this project, which involved extensive engagement with the property owner and the Nisga’a Village of New Aiyansh. The project underwent a complete scope change at the request of the property owner, requiring a tailored design solution. The design included the installation of a new overhead line along Gitzyon Avenue and a new underground service to power BC Hydro’s EV chargers.
The project presented several challenges, including the installation of overhead lines near existing buildings, roadways, and vegetation, upgrading the electrical system from single-phase to three-phase, crossing BC Hydro’s underground infrastructure over a deep ditch along Gitzyon Avenue, and addressing concerns related to an existing propane tank and potential gas lines. RAM also provided construction support for the service connection, ensuring the successful implementation of the design.
Approach
RAM’s approach included active collaboration and regular communication to ensure the project’s success. Meetings were held with the property owner and BC Hydro to explore design options and address concerns. RAM also participated in weekly meetings with AtkinsRéalis and BC Hydro to review updates, design changes, and project status, as well as separate weekly meetings with BC Hydro EV Project Managers to track progress, scope, and schedules.
RAM provided redlined design options to BC Hydro, detailing the advantages and disadvantages of each, and ensured all designs prioritized safety through the use of calculation tools, consultations with BC Hydro distribution engineers, and thorough Professional of Record reviews. Environmental engagement was initiated to assess cultural monitoring, species at risk, and other environmental concerns, complemented by ongoing Safety by Design and zone awareness reports at each stage.
During construction, RAM collaborated closely with contractors and construction managers, offering timely responses, sketches, redlines, and revisions to drawings as needed. Professional decisions were provided promptly to address concerns and ensure smooth project execution.
Results
The project was successfully completed and has been in service since October 2024, delivering the first EV fast-charging hub in New Aiyansh. This milestone advances BC Hydro’s mission to expand clean energy access for British Columbians. With over 180,000 EVs in B.C. and projections of up to 900,000 within a decade, BC Hydro’s 486 fast-charging ports at 138 sites are driving EV adoption. The new hub supports plans for more multi-charger sites along highways and in urban areas in BC.
