Darryl Matson, P.Eng., PE

Darryl Matson, a Senior Vice President and Senior Project Director with COWI, is a recognized leader in heavy civil design and construction.

After completing his Bachelor and Master’s of Applied Science at the University of British Columbia, Darryl joined Buckland & Taylor where his initial focus on seismic retrofit and detailed designs resulted in his participation in iconic projects including San Francisco’s Golden Gate bridge, as well as the Iron Workers’ Memorial and Lion’s Gate bridges right here in Vancouver.

Darryl’s technical capacity and his passion for leading and developing high performing teams resulted in him assuming the role of President and CEO of Buckland & Taylor – by then part of COWI – from 2013 to 2016.

As his technical career advanced, Darryl recognized a gap in how the industry supports development of practitioners and committed significant time and effort to giving back through leadership development and mentoring. His personal journey of self-discovery and improvement reinforced his strong belief that understanding yourself is necessary to help others.

Darryl’s leadership journey means that he has been a regular participant in UBC student outreach and has participated and presented many times to ACEC-BC’s Young Professionals Group. At COWI, he hosts “Table Talks with Darryl” and developed and co-delivered “Unleash”, an internal leadership development program.

In making their selection, the jury noted Darryl’s long-term and significant contributions to ACEC-BC. For many years he was the ACEC-BC Chair of the MoTI joint liaison bridge subcommittee. Through this work, Darryl collaborated with the Ministry to develop and implement Technical Circular T-06/09, a standard still in use supporting clarity of roles and responsibilities in delivering BC’s critical transportation infrastructure programs.
