Karen Savage, P.Eng., FEC, President and founder of Horizon Engineering, began her career as a construction manager after receiving a Bachelor of Applied Science in civil engineering from the University of British Columbia.
After 10-years of working in construction and consulting engineering, Karen took the leap to create her own company, Horizon Engineering, a geotechnical firm where she built a culture supporting team members to access more flexible working arrangements. She is described by one of her nominators as “synonymous with boldness, humility, and new ways of thinking”. Horizon Engineering was at that time, and for decades to come, the only ACEC-BC member firm led by a woman.
A passionate professional, Karen’s extensive and unrelenting service to the engineering profession is evident through professional service with ACEC-BC, Engineers and Geoscientists BC, Engineers Canada, and many other community and academic organizations. Beginning early in her career and continuing today, Karen supported the engineering community to the betterment of technical practice, and to push for meaningful culture change to support diverse participation in the profession.
Trailblazer, champion, mentor, and expert are just some of the words used to describe Karen by her nominators.
